How to fill a day at The Newt In Somerset

If you’ve never heard of The Newt in Somerset, it’s time you came for a visit.

Part Georgian country hotel, part working farm, part cyder lover’s dream, you can away hours wandering, wondering and sampling home-grown Somerset delights.

And the best bit? It’s only a stone’s throw from Hadspen Glamping. In fact, if you book one of our luxury lodges, we’ll be only too happy to offer you a guest pass to visit The Newt for a fraction of the price you’d pay for membership.

But just in case we haven’t convinced you, what can you expect to pack into your day at The Newt?

Wander the gardens

Walk the treetop walkway

Visit The Story of Gardening

From woodlands to parklands to formal gardens, you’ll find a variety of different areas as you wander the estate. Head to the kitchen gardens to marvel at the neatness and organization of the 350 different varieties of fruit, vegetables and herbs for use in the restaurants on site, and wander through the Winter Garden with its collection of exotic ferns and beautiful orchids.

Our favourite bits? Don’t forget to head into the woods to find the 300-year old Druid tree and keep your eye out for all the wildlife. We regularly spot deer, plenty of different birds and of course those Great Crested Newts after which the place is named.

While you’re at it, don’t miss the treetop walkway. It snakes its way through the trees about 40ft up in the air, offering amazing views. The kids will love looking down on the deer passing through the forest below. This is also the best way to reach The Newt’s acclaimed gardening museum.

Ever wondered about the history of gardening? Perhaps not, but we promise you’ll find it fascinating when you look at it through the lens of The Story of Gardening. Learn about why we humans decided we wanted to shape and maintain the grounds around our homes, and why grand gardens became a symbol of status and wealth. With plenty of interactive exhibits, you’ll be taken through famous gardens of the world as well as horticulture related artworks like Monet’s lily ponds. Definitely worth a visit.

Pit stop for a light lunch in the cyder bar

Learn about the bees

From sausage rolls to soups and salads, we highly recommended a lunchtime pit stop to enjoy a glass of The Newt’s very own cold-pressed cyder and a light bite before continuing on your adventures. You can even purchase a picnic for your little ones so they can munch to their heart’s content as you explore the rest of the gardens and grounds.

Bees are some of the most fascinating creatures in the world, and it’s not often you get to see them working away inside their hive. But at the Newt’s Beezantium you can. Along with exhibits exploring just how important bees are to us as humans, and a quite frankly fabulous honey-comb inspired yellow seat with a view, you’ll get to see up close where The Newt’s delicious honey comes from.

Tour a real roman villa

Take afternoon tea at the Newt, Somerset

Pick up a treat at the shop

When the remains of a Roman settlement dating back to 351AD were unearthed during building works, what were the owners of the estate to do? Create a complete reimagining of a Romano-British villa of course. As well as an immersive visitor centre and museum. Genuinely fascinating, but we do recommend booking a timeslot in advance as it gets pretty busy.

Fun fact: our very own Hadspen Quarry Blue Lias tiles were used for the roof of the villa.

Relax and enjoy a delicious Somerset cream tea in the delightful Garden Cafe as you gaze over the kitchen gardens and orchards below. You may even spot the team hard at work picking the veggies for tomorrow’s menu.

A visit to The Newt would not be complete without perusing some of the delicious Somerset specialities available in their farm shop. From handmade breads, to meats, cheeses, preserves and cyders, we guarantee you will be spoilt for choice. And you definitely won’t leave empty handed.
